If you cannot get a charging point in your own parking bay yet, an EV is still workable, but it stops being a background convenience and becomes a small weekly routine you plan for. Measure how many kilometres you genuinely drive in an ordinary week, convert that into units of electricity, then decide whether you meet it with short top-ups near home or one longer weekly session. Choose two locations you have personally tested rather than one you have seen on a map, confirm access hours and connector type yourself, and keep a fallback. Done deliberately, charging away from home costs you time rather than stress.
Start by measuring what you actually drive
It is easy to misjudge your own mileage, usually upwards: the occasional long trip sticks in the memory and the days the car did not move do not. Note your odometer on a Monday morning and again the following Monday, for three weeks, so you capture a quiet week, a normal week and a busy one. The busy week is your planning number; the normal week is your budgeting number.
Turning kilometres into units
Your car's trip computer shows consumption, usually as kilometres per kWh. Read it over several hundred kilometres of your own driving rather than trusting the brochure range: traffic, air conditioning and a full car all move the figure.
Suppose your display settles at 6 km per kWh and your busy week is 240 km. That week needs roughly 40 units. Substitute your own two numbers; both vary widely. Charging losses mean the meter records more than the battery gains, so treat your figure as a floor, not a ceiling.
Now convert units into time. If a point you can reach delivers around 7 kW and you can leave the car three hours, that is roughly 21 units a visit, so a 40-unit week becomes two visits. Two rhythms: topping up or one weekly session
Topping up means plugging in whenever the car is already parked somewhere with a point, for as long as you were going to be there anyway. The battery rarely gets very low or very full. It suits people whose regular destinations happen to have a point.
The weekly session means one deliberate stop, planned into your week, taking the battery from low to high in a single visit. It suits a predictable schedule and a location you trust, and reduces the whole business to one appointment rather than a running calculation.

Vet a location before you depend on it
A point that exists is not the same as one you can use at eight on a Wednesday evening. Visit at the hour you would actually need it, and check the following.
- Access hours. Is the gate, ramp or shutter open when you need it, including Sundays and public holidays?
- Connector type. Does the connector physically match your car, and must you bring your own cable?
- Bay discipline. Do petrol and diesel cars sit in the bay, and does anyone enforce it? A blocked bay can undo an otherwise sound plan.
- Total cost of stopping. Some points sit inside paid parking, so add the parking charge to the electricity charge before comparing.
- Queue at your hour. Two cars ahead of you on a slow point can mean an hour of waiting.
- Shelter and drainage. Where does water go in heavy rain, and would your cable sit in it?
- Who to call. Is there an attendant or a displayed number for when a session will not start?
Costs: verify them, do not assume them
Ignore general claims about charging costs and work with two figures you can see yourself. The first is the rate displayed at the point you use, which may be per unit, per minute, or per unit plus a parking fee. The second is your own domestic rate, taken from your bill rather than anybody's estimate. Then compare like with like, using two rates you have written down yourself. Suppose your own bill works out to ₹8 per unit at the margin, and suppose the point you use displays ₹18 per unit once its parking fee is added. On those assumptions a 40-unit week costs ₹320 at home against ₹720 there, a difference of ₹400 a week, or about ₹1,600 over four weeks. Both numbers stand in for figures you must look up yourself; neither is a going rate anywhere.

Workplace, relatives and other people's electricity
Often the best option is not a commercial point at all, but somewhere you already spend hours: an office car park, a relative's independent house, a shop you own.
If you are asking an employer, put it in writing and address the two things facilities teams worry about: whether the existing supply can take it, and who pays for the units. Both are questions for their electrician and accounts team. Offer to pay for what you draw, and say how you would measure it.
If you charge at a relative's home, settle the money from the first week or it quietly becomes a grievance. The cleanest method is a photograph of their meter before and after each session; failing that, use the units your car reports as added, at the rate from their bill. Pay monthly, and round in their favour.
One caution has no exceptions. Charging from an ordinary domestic socket draws a substantial current for many hours at a stretch, which can be more than a socket, an extension board or an older circuit was installed to carry. Only a licensed electrician can judge that at a specific site, so before relying on any socket regularly, have one assess that circuit, its protection device and its earthing. Habits that keep this sustainable
What makes this sustainable is habit rather than equipment. Count the hours as well as the rupees. Suppose a visit costs you 45 minutes at the point and 20 minutes of driving each way: that is about an hour and a half, and two visits put your week near three hours. Use your own timings; time decides this as often as money does.
- Set a floor and respect it. Decide the state of charge below which you charge at the next opportunity, whatever the inconvenience. That buffer turns a broken charger into an annoyance rather than a crisis.
- Charge on the way, not on a special trip. Attach it to a journey you were making anyway; a dedicated round trip is the part that turns tiresome.
- Keep a tested second location. One alternative you have used beats five you have only seen listed.
- Learn the quiet hours. Note when you find the point busy and shift around it; a mid-morning or late-night slot may mean no queue at all.
- Keep the cable and any access card in the car, permanently, not in the flat.

Treat all of this as a bridge, not a destination. Can I own an EV if I have no charging point at home?
Yes, it is workable, provided you have at least one charging location you have tested and can reach reliably, and your weekly driving is modest enough to cover in one or two sessions. Work out your real weekly kilometres and your car's consumption first: those two numbers decide whether the arrangement is comfortable or exhausting.
How often will I need to charge at a public charging station?
Divide your weekly units by what a realistic visit delivers. Suppose your week needs 40 units and a three-hour stop at a 7 kW point gives you roughly 21: that is two visits. Use your own kilometres, your own consumption figure and the actual power of the point you use, because a slower point can easily triple the number of visits.
Is public charging more expensive than charging at home?
Often it is, because a commercial point has to cover its equipment, its land, its electricity and a margin, and may add a parking fee that your own supply does not carry. How big the gap is for you depends on your own domestic tariff and the operator's rate, so compare the number displayed at the point against the per-unit figure from your own bill rather than any general claim.
Can I run a cable from my flat down to my car in the parking?
It is rarely a good idea, and your society may well not allow it, so read your society's own by-laws before anything else. A trailing cable is a trip and water hazard, it is exposed to damage, and it draws a heavy continuous current through wiring that may never have been assessed for that duty. Before any regular arrangement, have a licensed electrician assess the circuit, its protection device and its earthing at that specific site.
What do I do if the charger is broken or occupied when I arrive?
This is what the floor and the backup are for. If you never let the battery drop below a comfortable reserve, an unavailable charger costs you a change of plan rather than a tow. Keep the operator's number, and if your primary point stays unreliable for weeks, promote your backup and find a new one.
